Cherry Blossoms ‍Approaching Peak Bloom in Washington, D.C.

The cherry blossom trees in Washington,⁢ D.C., are nearing⁢ their peak flowering period.⁤ The National Park Service projects the best viewing period to be ⁤from March⁣ 28-31. If accurate, this would be a later ⁤bloom than the previous year. Full bloom is defined as when 70% of the Oi Yoshino cherry blossoms are in bloom, typically lasting about a week, depending on weather conditions.

The National Park Service anticipates the fluffy white flowers will peak this Sunday,marking the fifth stage of the sixth stage in⁤ the blooming⁢ process. Full bloom is expected as early as friday.

World Figure Skating Championships to Take Place in Boston

The World Figure Skating Championships will be held Wednesday at TD Garden in Boston, hosted by the Boston Skating Club. The event will feature world champion ilia Malinin, 20, who will defend his title.

Malinin expressed sadness over the loss of⁣ members of his Washington figure skating club ‍who died in an air crash near ⁣Reagan Airport earlier this year. Sometimes I still have one thing or another. Sometimes, I can’t see them on the ice, I can’t see them training with me, I can’t see them looking up to me, which really makes me feel a little sad. In this world, I really want to do something ⁣for⁤ them.

Three young figure skaters, Jinna Han, Spencer Lane,⁣ and Olivia Ter, along with coaches Evgenia⁢ Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, died in the Jan. 29 air crash. ⁢Following the tragedy, the club hall was filled with flowers, and a white rose was placed on a table ⁤for each of the deceased.

A celebration in Washington earlier this month featured performances by Malinin, U.S. champion Amber Glenn, and former Olympic champions Scott Hamilton, Brian ⁣Boitano, and Kristi Yamaguchi. The show was broadcast ⁢locally and streamed on Peacock, with NBC planning⁤ a replay the following Sunday.Thirteen players won either a gold or silver medal during the competition.

Montgomery County Ranked among Healthiest Places to Live

The 2025 County Health Rankings identifies Montgomery County as one of the healthiest places to live in Maryland ⁢and the U.S. the annual report considers factors such as physical exercise, health care, housing, and employment to assess health and well-being, aiming to reveal how health is affected by where we live, study, work and play.

The report commends Montgomery County‍ for its life expectancy of 83 years, exceeding the national average of 77 years. The county also demonstrates ⁢a⁣ lower rate of premature death compared to the national average, along with higher⁢ vaccination rates and lower rates of smoking, obesity, and teenage fertility.

Montgomery County provides exercise options with access to 100%. The county also has a high rate of access to health care, with fewer uninsured adults‍ and a greater number of primary⁣ care physicians, dentists, and mental health providers per resident. The county also ranks ⁤highly in factors such as median‍ income, homicide rate, and education.

while we should be happy with these results, we also know there⁣ is more work to be done. ‍The⁤ data shows that there are obvious gaps in our community and we will work to address these issues. we are lucky to build strong partnerships with healthcare organizations, nonprofits and community organizations to provide our residents with opportunities to live a healthy life.

Former Culpeper County Sheriff Sentenced to Prison for Bribery

Former Culpeper County, Virginia, Sheriff Scott Jenkins, 53, received a 10-year⁢ prison sentence for multiple bribery charges. He was⁣ convicted in December for his participation in the “Cash‍ For Badge” program in 2022, where he accepted over $75,000 in exchange ⁤for appointing an unqualified ⁤auxiliary deputy sheriff.

Jenkins’s charges included one count of conspiracy, four counts of fraud in honest service, and seven counts⁢ of bribery involving ⁣federal funding programs.

We require elected law enforcement officials to comply with higher standards of conduct, and in this case proves that the Justice Department will hold them accountable when these officials use their powers to⁤ seek improper personal gain.

During ‍the December trial, two FBI undercover agents testified that they gave Jenkins‍ envelopes containing $5,000 and $10,000 in cash, respectively, to become auxiliary deputy sheriffs. ⁤Jenkins also accepted bribes from at least five other people in the form of campaign donations.
