Chery to Potentially Manufacture Cars in UK Using Jaguar Land Rover Plant
China’s chery Automobile Co. is considering using a manufacturing plant owned by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in the United Kingdom to produce vehicles, a proposal supported by the UK government and slated for discussion during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing next week.
According to two individuals with knowledge of the discussions, Chery would utilize an existing JLR facility to build cars in Britain. Three sources close to the negotiations confirmed the UK government has been actively seeking to attract Chery to establish vehicle production within the country for the past several years.
Negotiations remain preliminary, and specific details are still under growth. Though, Chery and JLR are scheduled to engage in exploratory talks during Starmer’s trip to China – the first visit by a British Prime Minister in eight years. The delegation accompanying Starmer includes key buisness leaders. This development follows the UK’s recent approval of a Chinese “super embassy” in London on January 16, 2026, a project that previously faced criticism from Washington due to escalating geopolitical tensions.
