Chesebro Disbarred in NY Over 2020 Election Role
Kenneth Chesebro,a former legal adviser to Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign,is now prohibited from practicing law in New York. The disbarment is a result of his role in attempts to overturn Trump’s loss to Joe Biden five years ago.
A New York state appeals court order Thursday cited Chesebro’s criminal conduct. Specifically, the court pointed to his conspiracy to commit filing false documents related to efforts to negate Trump’s defeat in Georgia. The court stated that this conduct “undercuts the very notion of our constitutional democracy that he, as an attorney, swore an oath to uphold.”
Chesebro, admitted to the New York bar in 2007, faces immediate disbarment, according to the court order.
In 2023, Chesebro reached a plea agreement with georgia prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit filing false documents after an indictment on seven counts. Trump,along with Chesebro and 17 others,pleaded not guilty in the case. The case faced delays this year, influenced by Trump’s election win in November and the removal of Fulton County District Attorney fani willis as prosecutor.
The court, which initially suspended Chesebro last year, emphasized his “cavalier attitude” given his extensive background in constitutional and election law. An official report disputed claims that Chesebro was not the architect of trump’s plans, stating that evidence supported the claim that his legal analysis fueled the effort.
Chesebro’s attorney did not promptly respond to requests for comment.
Chesebro joins other Trump-allied attorneys facing penalties for their involvement in election interference efforts. Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in New York and Washington, D.C., while Jenna Ellis was barred from practicing in Colorado for three years after pleading guilty related to efforts to subvert the election.
