Taiwan Councilor Admits to Fraud, Agrees to Return Ill-Gotten Gains
(Central News Agency Reporter Zhang Rongxiang, Tainan, 25th) Chiayi City Councilor Dai Ning, who is accused of fraudulently claiming assistant fees, maintained his innocence in the first trial but changed his plea to guilty in the second trial today in Tainan High Court.
Dai Ning admitted in tears that some of the assistants were fake and expressed his willingness to take responsibility for his actions. He also agreed to return the ill-gotten gains of over NT$4.31 million by the end of December.
Dai Ning’s life plan did not initially include a career in politics. However, after graduating from college, he worked in a Taipei investment company before returning to run for election due to his father’s affection. After being elected, his father had full control, but Dai Ning also had responsibilities as a member of parliament.
Dai Ning’s case has sparked controversy, especially since his family members registered to run for the East District of Chiayi City as City Councilor and were successfully re-elected while he was detained. The Chiayi District Court sentenced him to 10 years and 6 months in prison in July 2023 and deprived him of his civil rights for 5 years.
