Inaugural Hall of Fame Class Rivera was officially inducted into the Hispanic Football Hall of Fame on May 5, 2026. He is among a select group of individuals chosen for the hall’s first-ever class. Other members of the inaugural 2026 class include Tom Hendricks, Tom Flores and Tom Fears, according to reporting from ChiCitySports. Playing Career and Historical Milestones Before entering the professional ranks, Rivera played for the California Golden Bears from 1980 to 1983. During his collegiate tenure, he earned the Pop Warner Trophy, an award given to the most valuable senior on the West Coast. In his final college season, he was also named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Rivera’s collegiate performance led the Chicago Bears to select him in the second round of the NFL draft at No. 44. The 6-foot-3 defensive standout began his career in Chicago as a special teamer and a rotational linebacker. During his time with the Bears, Rivera achieved a significant historical milestone. He became the first American of Puerto Rican descent to win a Super Bowl, contributing to the Chicago Bears’ championship victory in 1986. Rivera remained with the Chicago franchise for his entire NFL playing career, eventually retiring in 1992. Transition to Coaching Following his retirement as a player, Rivera transitioned into coaching, serving in various capacities across several NFL organizations. His professional coaching journey included stints with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Carolina Panthers. Throughout his coaching ascent, Rivera held multiple specialized roles, including: Defensive quality control coach Linebackers coach Defensive coordinator Head coach Head Coaching Tenure and Achievements The 64-year-old Rivera found significant success as a head coach, most notably during his tenure with the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2019. During those nine seasons, he amassed 76 wins. His leadership in Carolina was recognized by the league on two separate occasions, as Rivera won the NFL Coach of the Year award in both 2013 and 2015. Rivera’s most recent role in the NFL was as the head coach of the Washington Commanders. Serving from 2020 to 2023, he led the Commanders to one postseason appearance and finished his tenure with the franchise with a 26-40 record.
