Former Chicago Officer Pleads Guilty in Sexual Misconduct Case
Updated June 11, 2025
Eric Tabb, 35, a former Chicago police officer, pleaded guilty tuesday to two felony counts of aggravated battery in a public place stemming from separate sexual misconduct incidents involving female colleagues. One incident occurred at the police training academy, and the other at a police precinct.
Tabb’s case gained attention after an inquiry highlighted the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) handling of sexual assault allegations against its officers. He was arrested in December 2023 and later fired. Records indicate Tabb is among 14 officers in the past decade accused of sexual assault who had prior misconduct allegations.
Judge James B. Novy sentenced Tabb to 30 months of probation as part of a plea agreement that reduced the charges. Tabb must also enroll in a sex offender program.
During the hearing, both victims, who are also police officers, delivered impact statements.
“The women I speak for today, including myself, were women that trusted Eric Tabb, spending eight months with him forming that trust in a police academy. As of today, there is hope that all us women affected can put this in the past,” one officer stated.
Novy approved the plea deal to help the victims move forward. He warned Tabb that any violation of his probation terms would result in imprisonment. “Everyone wants closure. They want to put this behind them. I’m going to keep a close eye on this,” Novy said.
The charges relate to two specific incidents. In August 2023, at a Wrigleyville bar, Tabb allegedly sexually assaulted a fellow recruit. Then, in December 2023, at a police precinct, he allegedly touched another probationary officer’s crotch.
Alexus Byrd-Maxey, the first recruit to report tabb, said she was disappointed with the plea agreement. “He’s been given grace, time and time again. They let him be a free man,” Byrd-Maxey said. “I feel like it’s still not being taken seriously, again.”
