A Family Torn Apart
A chicago-area couple’s life has been upended after Sergio Ramirez was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following what his wife, Kristina Ramirez, describes as a wrong turn near the U.S.-Canada border in Michigan. Sergio has been held at the Monroe County,Michigan Jail since late May. Kristina, a U.S. citizen, was also briefly detained for three days.
“My heart is broken for my best friend, my husband, with whom we built a life together,” kristina Ramirez shared, her voice filled with anguish. “I’m very upset, outraged at the injustice in this world. It’s wrong how thay have them hear.”
The Incident and Community Response
The couple was traveling in Michigan for their construction business when they inadvertently drove toward the Canadian border. On Wednesday, a rally was held in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, bringing together community members, family, elected officials, and civil rights activists to demand Sergio’s immediate release. Ed Yohnka, director of communications and policy for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of illinois, called the situation “a human tragedy about one family, but also an example of a system that has run amok.”
Legal Status and Deferred Action
Sergio Ramirez, originally from Mexico, has lived in the Chicago area for approximately 20 years. He has a U visa submission pending for the past seven years and is currently under deferred action, a status that provides protection against deportation. His attorney, Andres Diaz Jr., stated, “This is the most egregious case that I’ve ever seen,” emphasizing Sergio’s eligibility for permanent residency through his marriage to Kristina.
ICE’s Response and Policy Shift
ICE declined to comment on the specifics of the case, citing privacy policies. However, the agency released a statement on Thursday outlining a policy shift under Secretary Noem, reversing the Biden administration’s approach to border enforcement. The statement asserts a commitment to implementing the “rule of law” and enforcing federal immigration laws, stating that individuals in the U.S. illegally are subject to apprehension and removal.
“Make no mistake, if an individual is in the United States Illegally, they are breaking federal law and committing a crime. All illegal aliens may be subject to federal immigration enforcement. ICE identifies, apprehends, detains, and removes people who are amenable to removal from the United States.”
What’s Next?
Sergio ramirez is scheduled to appear in court next week. His wife, Kristina, remains heartbroken and resolute to fight for his release. “Without him, I’m heartbroken.I’m torn,” she said. “It’s totally unfair, not right.”
