Showrunner Allen MacDonald told TVLine that placing the leak on Doris was a planned choice to subvert expectations and avoid a predictable outcome.

It was one of the options on the table when I wrote the finale last year. When we came back into the writers’ room for Season 12, [the leak] was one of the first things we talked about, if not the first, and we decided that [Doris] would be the best course of action. It has a twist in it, it goes against expectations. We didn’t want it to be as simple as: Goodwin did it.
