A Chicago police officer, Krystal Rivera, 36, died Thursday night after being accidentally shot by a fellow officer on the city’s south Side. The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. as Rivera and the Gresham (6th) District tactical team were attempting to stop an individual suspected of possessing a weapon. Rivera, a single mother with four years on the force, was struck in the back by gunfire.
Following the shooting, Rivera was rushed to a hospital. En route,the squad car she was in crashed and caught fire,necessitating a transfer to another vehicle. The Cook County medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
According to a Chicago Police Department statement, the officer’s weapon was the onyl one discharged during the incident, and the gunfire unintentionally struck Rivera.Superintendent Larry Snelling stated that Rivera and another officer were pursuing the suspect on foot into a building when the shooting occurred. Several suspects are currently in custody.
Snelling described the Chicago police officer as a dedicated and energetic member of the force, noting she had confiscated two guns earlier that day. Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed the city’s collective grief, praising Rivera’s courageous service and assuring that the police department woudl receive the resources needed to ensure justice.
“She did great work, and if you talk to anyone on her team, they will tell you how great of a worker she was,” he said. “This is the risk that our officers take every single day.”
“The entire city of Chicago is grieving and mourning together over this tragic loss,” said Mayor Johnson.
Rivera’s 10-year-old daughter, Bella Medina, survives her. Medina told The Chicago Sun-Times that her mother’s goodbye before work Thursday felt different,filled with an unusually tight hug and kiss,and the words,”If anything happens,I’m always right here,in my heart.”
