The Chicago White Sox have signed veteran outfielder Austin Slater to a one-year contract worth $1.75 million. The deal includes potential performance bonuses totaling $500,000.
Slater can earn:
- $50,000 for playing in 50 games.
- $75,000 each for playing in 75 and 100 games.
- $50,000 for reaching 100, 150, and 200 plate appearances.
- $75,000 for 250 and 300 plate appearances.
Last season, Slater, who is turning 32 next month, played in 84 games with San Francisco, Cincinnati, and Baltimore. He had a batting average of .209, hitting two home runs and driving in 18 runs. Over his eight-year career, Slater has a batting average of .252, with 40 home runs and 171 RBIs.
The White Sox had a challenging season last year, finishing with a record of 41-121, setting a modern major league record for losses. To improve the team, they hired Will Venable as their new manager on October 31, following the firing of Pedro Grifol and the tenure of interim manager Grady Sizemore.
