AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – The Chiefs secured a hard-fought 19-15 victory over the Blues at Eden Park on Saturday, gaining a measure of revenge for last year’s Super Rugby Pacific Grand Final defeat. The match, a physical encounter from the outset, saw the Chiefs demonstrate resilience and tactical acumen, ultimately silencing the 25,200-strong home crowd.

The opening exchanges were characterized by handling errors and missed opportunities. Both sides struggled to establish dominance, with early penalty attempts going astray. It wasn’t until the 32nd minute that the scoreboard was troubled, as All Blacks lock Tupou Vaa’i powered over for the Chiefs’ opening try. Vaa’i proved a menace throughout the contest, contributing significantly on both attack and defense.

The Blues responded swiftly. A powerful run by Caleb Clarke set the platform, allowing Pita Ahki to put Zarn Sullivan through a gap for an unconverted try. The momentum swung back and forth and a late shoulder charge from Chiefs flanker Kaylum Boshier on Blues prop Josh Fusitu’a resulted in a yellow card, leaving the visitors a man down for the remainder of the first half. The teams went into the break tied at 5-5.

The second half began with a flurry of activity. The Blues quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage, with captain Dalton Papali’i crossing the line from close range. Sullivan’s subsequent conversion extended their lead to 12-5. However, the Chiefs refused to yield. A lineout drive provided the platform for Samisoni Taukei’aho to respond with a try of his own, with Josh Jacomb adding the extras to level the scores at 12-all.

As the game entered its final stages, both defenses stood firm. Sullivan added a penalty for the Blues, regaining a slender three-point advantage. With time running out, the Chiefs needed a spark. That spark came from halfback Cortez Ratima, who raced through a gap created by Samipeni Finau to score a crucial try. Jacomb’s conversion put the Chiefs ahead 19-15 with just four minutes remaining.

The Blues’ hopes of a late comeback were dashed when replacement halfback Sam Nock received a yellow card for a cynical infringement, effectively ending their chances of snatching victory. The Chiefs’ defensive effort in the closing minutes was particularly noteworthy, highlighted by crucial turnovers from Vaa’i and Naitoa Ah Kuoi.

The result underscores the Chiefs’ continued competitiveness, even after the departure of former coach Clayton McMillan. Players like Vaa’i and Quinn Tupaea, who quietly excelled in marshalling the backline despite the absence of Damian McKenzie due to the birth of his first child, demonstrated the depth and quality within the squad. The Blues, despite a strong performance from Papali’i and the returning Ahki, were unable to replicate the abrasive style that characterized their success last year.

The Chiefs’ victory was built on a strong forward platform and the opportunistic play of their backs. Ratima’s debut performance was particularly impressive, showcasing his vision and speed. The Blues, while displaying moments of brilliance, ultimately lacked the consistency and discipline needed to overcome a determined Chiefs side.

The Blues will now travel to Perth to face the Western Force next week, while the Chiefs return home to Hamilton to host the resurgent Crusaders. This win provides the Chiefs with a valuable boost as they look to build momentum in the early stages of the Super Rugby Pacific season.

Blues 15 (Sullivan, Papali’i tries; Sullivan conversion, Sullivan penalty)

Chiefs 19 (Vaa’i, Taukei’aho, Ratima tries; Jacomb 2 conversions)

HT: 5-5
