Specifically, certain metabolic pathways within the gut microbiota closed prematurely in the offspring. This early closure disrupted interaction between the gut microbiota and the immune system. As the animals matured, this disruption led to an overactive immune response and chronic inflammation, significantly increasing their susceptibility to inflammatory gut diseases and obesity.
Importantly, the study demonstrated that these effects occurred even when the offspring did *not* directly consume emulsifiers themselves, highlighting the potential for transgenerational effects via the mother’s microbiota.
