Examination Launched After HIV Infections
Indian authorities have launched an investigation following reports of children and adolescents contracting HIV after receiving infected blood transfusions. The cases center around five patients, aged 3 to 15, in the Satna region of Madhya Pradesh, central India, who are all being treated for thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder requiring regular transfusions.
The children tested positive for HIV between March and may 2023,and subsequent investigations confirmed the infections stemmed from contaminated blood received at a public hospital in Satna district,according to the BBC.
Delayed Response and Accountability
Reports indicate that despite the discovery of the infections, the hospital and local authorities did not take appropriate action for approximately nine months. NDTV reports that the contaminated blood came from an HIV-positive donor.
In response to the incident, the Madhya Pradesh government has suspended the doctor and two medical technicians responsible for the blood bank. An description has also been demanded from the doctor in charge of the Satna public hospital.
Families Express Outrage
The families of the affected children have voiced their anger and frustration.One father told the BBC, “My daughter was already suffering from thalassemia, but now she has also contracted HIV. It’s all because of Madhya Pradesh’s poor health care system.” Another father shared with NDTV that his daughter, now on HIV medication, continues to experience pain and lethargy, expressing uncertainty about the future.
