Experts are reporting an increase in young people developing bunions and other foot conditions linked to ill-fitting shoes, prompting concerns from children’s shoe retailers and podiatrists about long-term foot health.
Parents should monitor their children’s foot development with the same diligence applied to eye and dental health, according to footwear specialists who warn that improperly fitted footwear can lead to lifelong complications.
Bunions, characterized as bony lumps on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe, can be influenced by genetic predisposition but are often aggravated by shoes that are too tight, narrow, or lack proper support.
Podiatrists emphasize that ill-fitting shoes during childhood can contribute to a range of issues beyond bunions, including problems affecting the ankles, knees, and back, as well as conditions like fallen arches, hammer toes, and claw toes.
The rise in foot problems among young people coincides with the closure of over 1,000 specialist shoe shops in Great Britain since 2020, limiting access to professional fitting services and increasing reliance on online purchases where accurate sizing is difficult to achieve.
Some parents now report needing to travel up to 50 miles to find a store offering expert children’s shoe fitting, highlighting growing barriers to proper footwear assessment.
In response, a not-for-profit organization formed by 40 specialist shops has launched the “fit well, grow well” campaign to raise awareness about the importance of professional shoe fitting and provide free resources to help families locate fitting services across the UK.
While no scientific data currently confirms that poor footwear choices directly cause structural deformities in children, experts maintain that ill-fitting shoes are a significant aggravating factor for existing vulnerabilities and can lead to muscular imbalances and joint strain over time.
Health professionals continue to advise that foot health should be considered an integral part of overall pediatric wellness, with regular attention to shoe fit and foot development recommended alongside routine vision and dental check-ups.
