Chile is advancing the construction of a massive mineral storage dome as part of the Nueva Centinela project in the northern region of the country. The project, which involves a total investment of US$4.4 billion, is designed to expand the nation’s copper production capabilities and strengthen its position in the global minerals market.

The storage dome is a central component of the infrastructure development at Nueva Centinela. According to reports from Diario Financiero and Meganoticias, the structure reaches a height of 66 meters, making it taller than the dome of the Movistar Arena in Santiago.

The primary function of the dome is to provide high-capacity storage for extracted ore. Reporte Minero indicates that the structure is engineered to store 178,000 tons of mineral. This capacity allows the mining operation to maintain a consistent flow of material to processing plants, acting as a buffer that protects the ore from environmental conditions and ensures operational stability.

The broader Nueva Centinela initiative is part of a strategic effort to increase the efficiency and output of copper mining in Chile. As reported by Diario UNO, the project aims to double the mining capacity of the site, a move intended to help the country maintain and expand its influence over the international copper market.

Copper is a critical raw material for the global transition toward renewable energy, as it is essential for the production of electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, and electrical grids. By expanding its production capacity through large-scale infrastructure like the Nueva Centinela dome, Chile seeks to meet the rising global demand for the metal.

The financial scale of the project reflects the strategic importance of the expansion. The US$4.4 billion investment cited by La República covers not only the storage dome but the broader development of the mining complex, which includes the implementation of new technologies to optimize the extraction and processing of copper ore.

Construction is currently underway in the northern desert, where the majority of Chile’s copper reserves are located. The region provides the necessary geological conditions for large-scale open-pit mining, though it requires significant infrastructure to manage the volume of material extracted.

The project is scheduled to become fully operational starting in 2027. Once active, the combination of the increased extraction capacity and the high-volume storage provided by the 66-meter dome is expected to streamline the supply chain from the mine to the final concentrate product.

Chile remains the world’s leading producer of copper. The development of Nueva Centinela is viewed as a key step in ensuring that the country can sustain its production levels as older mines face declining ore grades. The ability to store nearly 180,000 tons of mineral in a single structure allows for greater flexibility in processing schedules and reduces the risk of production halts during peak extraction periods.

The scale of the dome serves as a physical indicator of the project’s ambition. By surpassing the height of major civic structures in the capital, the dome highlights the industrial priority placed on the northern mining districts to drive national economic growth and maintain a competitive edge in the global commodities trade.
