Matthei Faces Scrutiny as Polls Dip and Party Councils Loom
As the final pre-election polls are set to be released this Sunday, Sebastián Piñera’s former campaign manager, Evelyn Matthei, finds herself navigating a challenging political landscape. Recent survey results have indicated a dip in her support, prompting internal discussions within her party about the future of her candidacy. This weekend, both the National Renewal (RN) and the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) parties are holding their respective general councils to ratify parliamentary candidates. While these gatherings are typically procedural, the current political climate suggests that a broader debate about Matthei’s presidential aspirations is now unavoidable.
“Sacrifice” Debate Ignites Over Matthei’s Candidacy
Adding fuel to the fire, Deputy Alessandri has publicly defended Matthei, asserting that her recent comments where taken out of context and did not signal an intention to withdraw from the race. Alessandri emphasized his belief in Matthei’s commitment to Chile, stating, “I am sure and I have there’s no doubt whatsoever that she is willing to a very big sacrifice for Chile… I am thinking of a second round, I am thinking of a first round, I am thinking of a favorable survey and adverse surveys.”
Speaking on “24 Horas,” Alessandri lamented the tendency to “cut the phrases and put only one phrase.” He clarified his remarks, explaining, “What I wanted to say in that context, was that I thanked him for the sacrifice and was sure that Chile loved, therefore, he would be willing to sacrifice himself in the first and second round, but the sacrifice is to go to the first and second round.”
He further elaborated on his definition of sacrifice in this context: “If she gets off, renounced and is going to live on the beach, that is not the sacrifice.I was thanking just the sacrifice of undertaking a presidential, for the second time after 2013, and I thank her for the eventual second round that of course is still possible.”
Alessandri concluded by highlighting the true nature of political sacrifice: “When you have adverse surveys,of course it costs more to get up every day to campaign,to tour Chile,to present your proposals, but that is the sacrifice.” He underscored that “the sacrifice is to go to an electoral fight, when it is going to compete, to conquer wills and hearts.”
