At the end of December in Paranal, the‌ site of ‌the European Southern Observatory (ESO), a ceremonial laying‍ of ‍the cornerstone took place for the ‍foundations ‍of CTAO-South, marking a key ⁤stage in ⁣the project’s implementation. The work is being carried out ⁣by a consortium of chilean companies, ‌and‌ the first telescopes are expected to be installed by the end of 2026, opening a new era in sky observation.

New⁤ giant of astronomy. CTAO in Paranal

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) project is a global initiative aimed at building the largest ground-based gamma-ray observatory in⁤ the world.

SEE: “Eye” of the world to revolutionize science. Gigantic investment

CTAO will consist of two networks of telescopes: one in the northern⁤ hemisphere and one in the ⁢southern hemisphere. The southern part of the observatory (CTAO-South) is being built⁢ in the Paranal Observatory in northern Chile, a region famous for its exceptionally dry⁢ conditions, minimal cloud cover and almost zero light pollution. This ⁣is where the Very Large Telescope (VLT) already operates ⁢and⁤ the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is being built.

w różnych klas,⁢ umożliwiających obserwacje promieniowania gamma w szerokim zakresie energii: od około 20 GeV do 300 TeV.

Obserwatorium ⁤będzie ‌rejestrować kaskady cząstek powstające w atmosferze Ziemi w wyniku oddziaływania wysokoenergetycznego promieniowania gamma.Pozwoli to ‌badać najbardziej ekstremalne zjawiska ‍we Wszechświecie, w ‌tym:

  • czarne dziury
  • gwiazdy neutronowe
  • pozostałości po supernowych
  • potencjalne sygnały⁣ związane‌ z ciemną ⁣materią

Nowe możliwości⁣ astronomii

Połączenie CTAO z VLT i ELT ‌stworzy unikalną platformę badawczą:

  • umożliwi obserwacje źródeł promieniowania gamma w połączeniu z obserwacjami w świetle widzialnym i podczerwonym
  • pozwoli na badanie procesów⁢ fizycznych zachodzących ‌w ekstremalnych warunkach
  • otworzy nowe możliwości w badaniach ‍kosmologii i astrofizyki
