A New Era of Privacy Control
In a notable move towards bolstering user privacy, five of China’s leading android smartphone manufacturers – Honor, Lenovo, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi – have joined forces to create a unified platform for enhanced privacy permissions. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in standardizing data protection as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into mobile technology.

The initiative comes at a time of growing concern over data collection practices, especially as these companies rapidly incorporate AI features into their devices. The goal is to strike a delicate balance between enabling innovative AI functionality and safeguarding user data.
The Intelligent Terminal Alliance Takes the Lead
The collaborative effort is being spearheaded by the Intelligent Terminal alliance (ITGSA), a newly formed non-profit organization comprised of the five smartphone brands. According to a statement released by the ITGSA, the platform will focus on establishing “obvious and controllable” data authorization mechanisms. This means giving users greater clarity and control over how their information is accessed and used.
“Minimum and Necessary” Data Access
The core principle guiding this initiative is “minimum and necessary” data access. This means applications will only be granted access to the data absolutely essential for their function. The ITGSA plans to implement this through native API-based system controls and a robust platform review and control mechanism. This layered approach aims to minimize potential privacy breaches and ensure responsible data handling.
Specifically, the platform will initially focus on five high-frequency data use scenarios: contacts, photos, and videos. Permissions will be divided into system-level and request-level controls. For example, accessing photos will require explicit user selection within the application, while system-level thumbnail displays will not grant applications direct file access.
What This means for You
This collaboration represents a positive step towards greater user control over personal data. While the full impact remains to be seen, the commitment to transparency and “minimum necessary” access suggests a shift towards a more privacy-conscious mobile ecosystem. Consumers can expect to see more granular permission settings and increased clarity regarding how their data is utilized by applications.
