North Korean Basketball Player’s Sudden Return Sparks Tensions in China-North Korea Relations
The Chinese government has drawn attention by making an exception to the report that a North Korean player who entered the women’s professional basketball league in the country suddenly returned to the country after a transfer, citing “implementing sanctions against North Korea.”
The Chinese Embassy in the United States stated that the Chinese government has been fully and strictly implementing the UN Security Council’s resolutions on North Korea, despite not being aware of the early return of Park Jin-ya of the North Korean women’s basketball team.
Park Jin-a joined the Chinese Women’s Professional Basketball League team Wuhan Shengfan in June this year but returned to China urgently just one month later. Although the specific reason for her return has not been made public, it is likely that Park Jin-ah was sent back to North Korea by China due to violating sanctions.
This move is a rare evaluation and another sign of the recent “cracks” in North Korea-China relations. The Chinese authorities previously tacitly approved North Korea’s dispatch of workers, but this incident suggests a shift in their stance.
Experts believe that China emphasized its image of abiding by sanctions against North Korea and subtly expressed its dissatisfaction with North Korea by repatriating symbolic “North Korean” athletes. This incident highlights the growing tensions in China-North Korea relations.
