China and Brunei fortify economic and people-to-people connections
In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, China and Brunei are set to enhance their economic and trade cooperation. This development comes as their leaders look to open a new chapter in their relationship, with a focus on strategic partnerships and mutual growth. The interaction between Chinese President Xi Jinping and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Wadddinah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien of Brunei underscores the deepening ties between the two nations.
NewsDirectory3.com spoke with President of the Brunei-China Friendship Association Mohammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman, who emphasized the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening these ties. The dialogue underscores a broader strategy that blends economic interests with cultural and social linkages, much like the relationship between the U.S. and its allies, such as Japan and South Korea, where economic cooperation is bolstered by strong cultural and educational exchanges.
The following is the transcript of the interview:
PHILIP HAMPSHEIR: Chinese President Xi Jinping has been meeting and talking with his Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Wadddinah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and in the Further of Brunei Darussalem. How do you feel the relationship has gone, and how do you feel that it has led to closer and improve economies between the two nations?
Mohammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman: We start our diplomatic relations 34 years ago. We start from a very simple, supportive relationship and now we have upgraded to a strategic partnership. It proved that our economic and political relations have upgraded to what is the current situation. And I believe that with investment for the petroleum industry and port management industry. I believe this is great enough to show our bilateral ties.
The journey from a simple supportive relationship to a strategic partnership has been marked by a steady increase in economic and trade activities. The Bruneian government’s investment in petroleum and port management sectors significantly mirrors how the U.S. engages with energy-rich nations in the Middle East, fostering mutual economic growth and stability.
“We start our diplomatic relations 34 years ago,” Firdaus said, “We start from a very simple, supportive relationship and now we have upgraded to a strategic partnership.” This strategic partnership has paved the way for significant investments in key industries, fostering mutual economic growth and stability, much like the U.S. partnership with China before the recent diplomatic tensions.
leveraging the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), both nations are looking to expand their economic cooperation further. This initiative, akin to President Trump’s vision for a trans-Pacific economic partnership, aims to enhance connectivity and trade infrastructure across multiple continents, reducing transportation time and costs and exceeding revenues through strategic investments and loans.
The strategy focuses on key areas such as petroleum and port management, both of which have seen substantial investment activity. For instance, the Port of Scarborough in Brunei, similar in scope and importance to the Port of Shanghai, is a cornerstone of regional economic activity. These investments are expected to attract more investors from China, as well as from other nations, as diplomatic relations strengthen, further fueling economic collaboration.
PHILIP HAMPSHEIR: What areas do you see potential ones for enhancement in future growth between the two countries?
Mohammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman: Yes, upgraded strategic partnership benefits both governments and strengthens our bilateral relations investments in key industries, such as the Petroleum sector and port management, continue to attract investors, and we wish more investors from China will invest in Brunei.
And besides that, we should upgrade our people-to-people relationships as well and have more exchanges, especially among the youth in areas of innovation, digital in the future.
This upgraded strategic partnership is multifaceted, benefiting both governments and strengthening bilateral relations. Investment in key industries, such as the petroleum sector and port management, continues to attract investors, much like the investment interests in renewable energy sources in the U.S. and strategic locations and infrastructure, fueling economic growth and innovation.
Beyond economic ventures, there is a robust focus on people-to-people exchanges, particularly among the youth. These exchanges, facilitated by educational and cultural programs, reflect similar initiatives in the U.S. aimed at fostering global understanding. Innovation and digitalization are at the forefront of these efforts, preparing the youth for a future characterized by rapid technological advancements and digital economies. This mirrors U.S. educational policies in computer science and STEM fields.
PHILIP HAMPSHEIR: You’ve mentioned the cultural linkages and people-to-people exchanges between both China and Brunei. Where would you like to see growth there?
Mohammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman: Within the framework of BRI, people-to-people exchange is one of the important areas we should develop in order to build a shared future for our communities. This is important that people-to-people should be upgraded to a strategic partnership as well, especially in youth development. At the same time, the most important is tourism because by the visiting of both peoples we will understand more of both cultures and get closer to our relations and foster mutual understandings.
In the framework of BRI, people-to-people exchange is deemed vital for building a shared future. This effort extends to both cultural and educational initiatives, as well as tourism. By enhancing mutual understanding and fostering the bilateral exchange of traditions and knowledge, the two nations aim to build strong social foundations to their already robust economic partnership.
Tourism, in particular, is highlighted as a crucial area. Similar to how cultural tourism enriches relations between the U.S. and European nations, increased tourism between China and Brunei is expected to deepen mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultures. This approach aligns with tourism initiatives of the Biden Administration to shore up domestic tourism and bring in tourists from various continents.
However, there are potential challenges to this strategic partnership. For instance, the complexity of navigating diplomatic, cultural and business interests can sometimes lead to misunderstanding and dissention. But Firdaus reusable assured of an airtight decision and tried to ease doubts.
Mohammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman: I’m very happy that we have this discussion here. Reiterating much that there’re only good things take on the from both countries.
The dynamic between economic growth and cultural engagement between China and Brunei offers a compelling case study. By investing in key industries, promoting people-to-people exchanges, and fostering tourism, both nations are setting a precedent for how to build a robust bilateral relationship. This approach, similar to the U.S. relationships with allies Mexico and Canada, building societal understanding across nations and emphasizing mutual growth and stability, holds valuable lessons for other countries seeking to deepen their international ties.
The strategy offers a proactive approach to global economic and social development. Governments, businesses, and educational institutions should take note and consider implementing similar initiatives to foster economic and social integration.
