At Least 20 Killed in China Fireworks Accidents During Lunar New Year

At least 20 people have died in separate fireworks-related explosions across China during the ongoing Lunar New Year celebrations, state media reported. The tragedies, occurring in Hubei and Jiangsu provinces, have prompted renewed safety warnings from the government and a tightening of oversight of the fireworks industry.

The most recent incident, on Wednesday afternoon, occurred in Xiangyang, Hubei province, claiming the lives of 12 people. According to Xinhua News Agency, emergency crews quickly extinguished the resulting blaze at the fireworks shop. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion, but details remain scarce. State media reported that five children and seven adults were among the victims, including the shop owner and customers who had travelled to celebrate the holiday.

Just days prior, on Sunday, an explosion at a fireworks shop in Jiangsu province resulted in eight fatalities and two injuries. Local authorities stated that the blast was triggered when a resident ignited fireworks near the building.

The Ministry of Emergency Management issued a warning on Tuesday, stating that “fireworks are still the biggest risks during the Spring Festival period.” In response to the recent accidents, the ministry announced it will dispatch inspection teams to strengthen safety oversight across the entire fireworks supply chain – from production and transport to sales, and usage. The move aims to prevent and control safety risks associated with the traditional Lunar New Year practice.

The government is urging local authorities to prioritize fireworks safety and conduct immediate inspections of retail stores and outlets to identify and address potential hazards. Measures include curbing excessive stockpiling, preventing products from being displayed outside stores, and strictly prohibiting smoking or open flames inside retail locations. Inspections will also target vacant houses and warehouses to prevent the illegal storage of fireworks.

Despite recurring safety concerns, fireworks remain deeply ingrained in Lunar New Year traditions in China. Families traditionally set off firecrackers to usher in prosperity and ward off misfortune. However, the widespread use of pyrotechnics frequently leads to accidents. In June of last year, a blast at a fireworks factory in Hunan province killed nine people and injured 26 others.

Some cities in China have banned fireworks due to safety and air pollution concerns, but these measures have proven controversial. The tradition of firecrackers remains central to Lunar New Year celebrations for many, and some governments eased their bans last year. The ongoing dangers, however, underscore the challenges of balancing cultural tradition with public safety.

The Ministry of Emergency Management and the Office of the State Council Work Safety Committee held a meeting on Wednesday to address the issue, emphasizing the need for heightened safety awareness among the public. Local officials are being urged to take immediate action to mitigate risks and ensure a safe and peaceful Lunar New Year for all citizens.
