China Dominates Global Medical & Health Patent Landscape: 2025 White Paper

China Dominates Global Medical & Health Patent Landscape: 2025 White Paper

March 8, 2026 Dr. Jennifer Chen Health

China’s Rising Influence in Global Medical and Health Innovation

A new white paper analyzing global patent trends reveals a significant and rapidly growing influence of China in the medical and health industry. Published by China Intellectual Property Publishing Company Limited, the ‘2025 Medical and Health Industry Patent Analysis White Paper’ details a surge in patent applications originating from China, now accounting for over half of global activity in the sector.

The white paper, based on data through November 2025, indicates a cumulative total of over 470,000 global medical and health industry patent applications between 2019 and 2025. While growth was consistent from 2019 to 2023, a slight deceleration was observed in 2024.

Patent applications are heavily concentrated in several key regions: China, the United States, Korea, India, Japan and the European Patent Office (EPO). However, it is China’s growth rate that stands out. The country has experienced an average annual increase of approximately 15.7% in patent filings since 2019. This expansion is attributed to the increasing availability of medical data, a broadening industrial ecosystem, and the integration of digital technologies with medical advancements.

Currently, China holds over 249,000 patent applications in the medical and health industry, representing 52.4% of the global total – the largest patent activity worldwide. This demonstrates a substantial shift in the landscape of medical innovation.

Dominance in Patent Ownership

The white paper also highlights the growing prominence of Chinese companies and institutions among global patent holders. The top 10 global patent holders in the medical and health industry now include a significant number of Chinese entities. Leading the pack is Ping An Group, a Chinese conglomerate, with an impressive 5,704 patents.

Following Ping An Group, the rankings include: PHILIPS of the Netherlands (5,258 patents), SIEMENS of Germany (3,133 patents), Canon of Japan (2,915 patents), Nippon Electric (NEC) of Japan (2,114 patents), Samsung Group of Korea (2,085 patents), Tencent Group of China (1,901 patents), Zhejiang University of China (1,838 patents), Fujifilm of Japan (1,788 patents), and IBM of the United States (1,518 patents).

Samsung Group’s position at 6th place underscores its role as a major technology company in the global medical and health patent competition. The inclusion of Tencent Group and Zhejiang University in the top 10 further emphasizes the expanding technological influence of Chinese companies and research institutions.

Implications for the Future of Healthcare

Experts suggest that the convergence of digital technology, artificial intelligence, and data-driven services within the medical and health industry will intensify competition for related patents. This competition is expected to serve as a key indicator of core technological competitiveness, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of digital healthcare where medical technology and information technology intersect.

The broader context of global patent filings, as reported in the World Intellectual Property Indicators 2025, reveals a record-breaking 3.7 million patent applications filed in 2024, a 4.9% increase from 2023. This overall growth is driven largely by increased filings from China, India, and the Republic of Korea, indicating a global shift in innovation activity.

The CEC Capital China Healthcare Industry White Paper 2025 provides further insight into the Chinese healthcare market, estimating its total size to range between RMB 11.5 trillion and RMB 12.0 trillion (2024 figures), representing a year-on-year growth rate of 9% to 10%. This growth is fueled by China’s aging population and the increasing adoption of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, and robotics.

The pharmaceutical market in China remains stable at approximately RMB 3 trillion, while medical devices and diagnostics are projected to grow to around RMB 1.4 trillion. The most significant expansion is anticipated in healthcare services, digital health, and related sectors, forecast to reach RMB 10 trillion.

These trends suggest that China is not only becoming a major consumer of healthcare technologies but also a significant producer and innovator, poised to play an increasingly dominant role in shaping the future of global healthcare.
