China Expands in the Himalayas

China is expanding its territory in the Himalayas. Satellite images show significant construction activity. The government and social media provide evidence of development in several remote villages in the Himalayan valley.

According to Next Shark, the Chinese government has incentivized settlers to move to these newly built villages, including Demalong. Robert Barnett, a Tibet expert at SOAS University of London, notes that development in these areas began in 2016 but accelerated last year.

The Chinese government claims these settlements aim to improve the livelihoods of local residents. However, observers view this expansion as a strategy to strengthen China’s territorial claims by populating the area.

Reports indicate that China offers spacious homes and subsidies to settlers, reaching CNY 20,000 (around Rp 44 million) annually. In addition to housing, China is also constructing roads, military complexes, and infrastructure such as kindergartens and clinics.

On the other hand, Bhutan has repeatedly denied any intrusion into its territory. The Bhutanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently stated that the border remains undefined and expressed optimism about ongoing bilateral talks with China.

Experts suggest that Bhutan’s response indicates a potential strategic shift to stabilize relations and possibly reach an agreement. This is significant given the close ties between China and India.

Rishi Gupta, an assistant director at the Asia Society Policy Institute in New Delhi, stated, “China’s vulnerabilities compel it to increase its influence in Bhutan and assert territorial claims more aggressively to counter India’s strategic partnership in the region.”
