China and Indonesia Strengthen economic Ties Amid Global Trade War

Jakarta – Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s recent visit to Jakarta signals a deepening of economic ties between China and
Indonesia, focusing on trade, investment, and regional cooperation amid global economic uncertainty. Li met with
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday to explore avenues for expanding economic collaboration.
Li’s three-day visit, his first overseas trip this year, underscores the strategic importance of Indonesia, Southeast
Asia’s largest economy, to China.Both nations are members of the G20 and BRICS, highlighting their roles in the
global south.
Addressing the Indonesia-China Business Reception, Li emphasized China’s economic resilience despite external
challenges.He noted that china has been Indonesia’s largest trading partner for nine consecutive years, with
bilateral trade exceeding $147.8 billion last year, a 6.1% increase. The Belt and Road Initiative has also seen
significant progress, including nickel smelting plants and the Whoosh high-speed railway.
Subianto expressed gratitude for Chinese investment and invited further participation in Indonesia’s economy,
particularly in technology transfer and job creation.Indonesia seeks to play a larger role in supplying nickel and
other raw materials to China’s electric car industry.
During the visit, the two leaders oversaw the signing of agreements aimed at encouraging bilateral transactions in
local currencies, trade, investment, tourism, health, and agricultural exports. Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani
highlighted the potential for $10 billion in previously agreed-upon investments to materialize, spanning
transportation, industrial growth, and the chemical sector.
“I reiterate our commitment to strengthening our thorough strategic partnership with the people and the goverment
of China,” Subianto said, emphasizing the past ties between the two nations. “We see this will bring goodness
not only to the two countries, but also to the entire Asian region.”
What’s next
Following his visit to Indonesia, Premier Li Qiang is scheduled to travel to Malaysia to address the ASEAN-GCC-China
Economic Summit, further solidifying China’s economic engagement in Southeast Asia.
