under the new regulations, designated medical institutions within the pilot zone can now import limited quantities of specialized formula foods for rare diseases, full-nutrition medical foods, and select health supplements already legally marketed overseas. This initiative addresses a critical need for patients with rare and specific diseases, providing access to specialized nutritional support often unavailable in China. It also reflects a broader commitment to public health innovation and encourages research and growth in thes specialized food categories.

“This is a notable step forward in our efforts to provide cutting-edge healthcare options to patients both domestically and internationally,” said a spokesperson for the Boao Lecheng International Medical tourism Pilot Zone.

The pilot zone, established in 2013, has already been a pioneer in streamlining access to foreign pharmaceuticals and medical devices. This latest development builds on existing policies that exempt eligible drugs and medical devices from import tariffs and value-added tax until 2025.
