China has gifted two pandas to the United States while pulling its remaining pandas from Japan, prompting Japanese media to examine how the animal loans reflect shifting geopolitical dynamics, ytn.co.kr reported. The development leaves the United States with six pandas while Japan’s count drops to zero amid a diplomatic chill following remarks by Prime Minister Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
Panda Departures and Visitor Declines at U.S. and Japanese Zoos
Twin pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei left Tokyo’s Uoeno Zoo, drawing crowds of fans who lined up in the early morning hours to say goodbye. Footage from January showed visitors expressing deep emotional attachment to the animals, noting that visiting the zoo provided comfort during stressful times.
Following the departure of the twins, who were the last pandas remaining in Japan, visitor numbers at Ueno Zoo fell by 20% compared to the previous year. Japanese media coverage attributed the steep decline directly to the absence of the animals.
Beijing Removes Pandas After Diplomatic Friction with Tokyo
The removal of the pandas from Japan occurred three months after remarks by Prime Minister Takaichi regarding Taiwan created diplomatic friction between Beijing and Tokyo. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the two nations must communicate across various fields to resolve existing differences and operational issues.
At the same time, Beijing restarted its panda diplomacy with Washington during a summit. Japanese outlets contrasted this with the situation in the United States, which received two additional pandas to bring its total to six despite past high-stakes clashes over trade and tariffs.
South Korea and Australia Negotiate Panda Lease Arrangements
As Japan sits at zero pandas, neighboring countries experiencing improving relations with Beijing are moving in the opposite direction. South Korea and Australia are currently holding working-level consultations or finalizing actual panda lease arrangements as diplomatic channels thaw.
