DAKAR, Senegal – The Chinese Embassy in Senegal hosted a Spring Festival reception Monday evening in Dakar, a gathering that underscored the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations and highlighted the collaborative spirit leading into the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
Over 200 guests attended the event, including Senegal’s Secretary of State for Senegalese Abroad, Amadou Chérif Diouf. Diouf extended New Year greetings to the Chinese people on behalf of the Senegalese government and expressed his best wishes for continued prosperity. He emphasized the long-standing friendship between Senegal and China, noting the significant progress in their bilateral cooperation across various frameworks.
“Senegal and China enjoy a long-standing traditional friendship, and their bilateral cooperation maintained a high level of development and had recorded fruitful results in bilateral and multilateral frameworks,” Diouf stated, according to a report from Xinhua Press Agency. He specifically lauded the role of mechanisms like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in injecting momentum into Africa’s development.
Senegal’s commitment to its own long-term vision, “Vision Senegal 2050,” was also highlighted, with Diouf expressing a desire to draw inspiration from China’s modernization efforts. He articulated a goal of fostering an “exceptional” relationship between the two countries “at all levels.”
Li Fei, Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Senegal, reciprocated the warm wishes, extending greetings to the Chinese community within Senegal and friends of China. She pointed to the continued strengthening of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and Senegal, citing increased political trust and fruitful cooperation across multiple sectors. She also noted the vibrant exchange of people and cultures between the two nations.
The reception took place against a backdrop of significant milestones for both China and Africa. marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and African countries. Li Fei emphasized the synergistic potential of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges and the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in further bolstering cooperation between China and Senegal.
“The convergence between the Year of China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges and the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games should ‘create new synergies of cooperation between China and Senegal,’” Li stated.
The event wasn’t solely diplomatic; it also showcased cultural exchange. A martial arts demonstration by the Senegalese Wushu Federation drew enthusiastic applause. Performances by teachers and students from the Confucius Institute at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, featuring songs in Chinese, alongside dance and choir numbers, illustrated the growing cultural ties between the two nations.
The strengthening relationship between China and Senegal extends beyond cultural and diplomatic spheres. Recent collaborations include joint projects launched in to digitize Senegal’s road transport system, signaling a growing focus on technological partnerships. Senegal is actively seeking further strategic tech collaborations with China, particularly as it prepares to host the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. This support is expected to come through targeted investments, technical training, and academic cooperation.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has also emphasized the importance of deepening the China-Senegal strategic partnership, enhancing mutual political trust, and advancing shared development through key projects in infrastructure, energy, and digital innovation. He also called for stronger cultural and youth exchanges in anticipation of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has affirmed Senegal’s support for the One-China policy and pledged deeper collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative.
