China’s Spring Festival Travel Rush Reaches Historic Peak

China is experiencing an unprecedented surge in travel as the Spring Festival holiday continues, with February 20th marking a record high for daily passenger trips. According to data released by the Ministry of Transport on Saturday, February 21st, 2026, cross-regional passenger traffic reached 352.999 million, a 12.3 percent increase compared to the same day in February 20th, 2025.

This year’s Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, began on February 17th and includes a nine-day official holiday. The annual travel rush, known as “chunyun,” is widely considered the world’s largest annual human migration. Authorities anticipate a total of 9.5 billion inter-regional passenger trips during the 40-day rush period, which runs from February 2nd to March 13th.

The record-breaking figures on February 20th – the 19th day of the travel season – demonstrate a significant rebound in travel activity. Another report indicated that approximately 740,000 people arrived in Beijing by train on the same day, signaling a strong return to pre-pandemic travel patterns.

The railway network remains a central component of managing the massive flow of travelers. Increased capacity and expanded services have been implemented to accommodate the surge in demand. As of today, February 21st, over 3.1 billion train tickets have been sold for the Spring Festival travel period, according to reports.

Beyond traditional transportation methods, China’s domestically produced C919 aircraft is also playing a role in facilitating travel during the holiday. The deployment of the C919 during this peak travel season highlights the country’s advancements in aviation technology.

Earlier in the travel rush, from February 2nd to February 16th, China recorded over 3.5 billion inter-regional passenger trips, further illustrating the scale of this annual movement of people. The sheer volume of travelers presents logistical challenges, but authorities are working to ensure a smooth and safe travel experience for all.

The Spring Festival travel rush is not merely a logistical undertaking; it’s a cultural phenomenon deeply rooted in the importance of family reunions. Millions of Chinese citizens are making their way home to celebrate the holiday with loved ones, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere across the country.
