Rail Workers Maintain Vital Infrastructure During Spring Festival Rush

Across China, railway staff are working tirelessly to ensure safe and efficient travel for millions during the Spring Festival, the country’s most important annual holiday. From routine maintenance to specialized repairs, these dedicated professionals are the unsung heroes of the travel rush, often working through the night and away from their families.

In northwest China’s Qinghai Province, mechanics along the Qinghai-Xizang Railway have intensified patrols at key locations, safeguarding operations amidst the challenging terrain of the Kunlun Mountains. According to Xinhua, staff members of the Wangkun Line maintenance workshop in Golmud section under China Railway Qinghai-Xizang Group Co., Ltd. Were actively maintaining the rail as of February 6, 2026.

The work isn’t limited to simply checking tracks. At Beijing South Railway Station, a team dubbed “rail beauticians” is focused on precision grinding, a critical process for maintaining the quality of high-speed rail lines. These post-2000s workers utilize specialized grinders to sculpt the rails with millimeter precision, ensuring a smooth and safe ride for passengers. The Global Times reported on February 13, 2026, that this team operates in the early hours of the morning, working to minimize disruption to train schedules.

The dedication extends beyond high-speed lines. Workers along the Baolan Railway and Baoyin High-Speed Railway are also contributing to the smooth operation of the network. A report from Xinhua highlighted how generations of bridge keepers have witnessed and contributed to the evolution of railway infrastructure along these routes.

Railway police are also playing a crucial role, safeguarding international passenger rail services, specifically the China-Vietnam line, during the peak travel period. People’s Daily Online reported that increased security measures are in place to ensure the safety of passengers on this important international route.

The efforts aren’t just focused on keeping existing infrastructure running. Maintenance workers are also preparing for potential winter weather challenges. In Shanxi Province, railway staff were engaged in de-icing operations as early as January 9, 2025, anticipating the need to clear tracks and ensure continued service during the busy travel season. This proactive approach, as reported by Xinhua, demonstrates the commitment to passenger safety even before the official start of the travel rush.

The Spring Festival travel rush is characterized by mass family reunions, and the railway system is a vital artery connecting people to their loved ones. The work of these railway staff, from mechanics in the mountains to grinding teams in the cities, is essential to making those reunions possible. Their commitment, often performed away from their own families, underscores the dedication of countless individuals working to keep China moving during this important time of year.

The Global Times noted that President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of collective effort, stating, “We joined hands to build a better life and enjoyed it together.” This sentiment resonates with the spirit of those working on the front lines of the Spring Festival travel rush, ensuring that millions can return home safely and comfortably.
