GENEVA ⁢(AP) — The United States and China will begin negotiations to address their ongoing tariff dispute, China‍ confirmed Wednesday. The declaration follows what Beijing described as appeals from American industries ⁤and consumers, though China cautioned it would not compromise its core principles.

U.S. officials previously announced that high-level representatives from both countries would meet in Switzerland in the coming days to seek a resolution to the trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies.

A Chinese ministry spokesman stated that for negotiations⁢ to succeed, the United States‍ must acknowledge the critically important negative consequences of its unilateral tariffs, both domestically and globally.

As January, the U.S.administration has imposed tariffs totaling 145% on various Chinese products, along with targeted sectoral measures. China has responded with retaliatory tariffs of 125% on U.S. imports, as well as other specific countermeasures.

seeking De-escalation Before Agreement

This week’s discussions mark the first formal public commitment by both nations to⁢ address‍ the trade war.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott⁤ Besent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer ‍are scheduled to represent the United States at the talks, according ⁤to their respective offices.

Besent told Fox News the ⁤meetings, planned for Saturday and Sunday, aim to establish⁣ a foundation for future negotiations.

“We’re going to remember what we are going to talk⁤ about. My feeling is that it will try to descale, not the great commercial⁣ agreement,” Besent said on “The Ingraham Angle” program. “We have to reduce tension before being able to ⁤advance.”

Besent: “This is not sustainable”

chinese Vice premier he Lifeng will represent Beijing, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China’s Ministry of Commerce‍ pledged that the country would uphold justice and maintain its principles during the discussions.

The ministry spokesman added that China would not agree if the U.S. “speaks in one way and‍ acts about another,or even tries to continue coercing and blackmailing China under the appearance of conversations.” Beijing will not “sacrifice its position of principles and international equity and justice to seek ⁣any ⁤agreement,” the spokesman said.

The tariffs have resulted in significant economic strain ⁣for both countries, disrupting financial markets and causing a slowdown in bilateral trade.

“This is not sustainable, as I have said⁢ before, especially by China. 145%, 125% equals an embargo. We do not want to decoupling. What we want is a fair trade,” Besent⁣ said.
