China’s meteorological services are expanding from basic weather forecasting into real-time operational planning for renewable energy, aviation, and power infrastructure, according to reports from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). Speaking at the 5th Meteorological Economy Forum held during the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) in Beijing, officials detailed nationwide programs designed to turn weather data into direct business decisions.
Renewable Energy and Wind Resource Surveys
The China Meteorological Administration announced the nationwide expansion of a comprehensive wind and solar resource survey during the Beijing forum, according to Xinhua. Built on a dataset covering more than 10 years of hourly data at a 1-kilometer resolution, the initiative has grown from pilot projects in six provinces. Xu Xiaofeng, president of the Chinese Meteorological Service Association, stated that the survey evaluates resource endowment and development risks rather than simply measuring volume. According to Xu, the data provides a unified foundation for renewable energy planning, helping operators determine project siting and configure wind, solar, energy storage, and transmission capacity. For wind farm operators tracking an approaching typhoon, the data moves beyond a basic warning. Operators utilize the forecasts to decide when to halt turbines and when to safely restart them, which cuts unnecessary shutdowns and power-generation losses, Xinhua reported.
AI Integration in Aviation and Power Networks
Private weather companies are also integrating granular data with operational systems to serve specific industries, including energy, aviation, and rail transit. Jin Ruichao, general manager of Moji Weather’s government and enterprise business department, explained that the firm combines its meteorological capabilities with client business data to build customized solutions. For instance, Moji Weather collaborated with Xizang Airlines to establish tailored services for high-altitude airports. The company deployed an artificial intelligence model for forecasting plateau thunderstorms that provides 120-minute forecasts updated every six minutes with an accuracy rate exceeding 75 percent, helping avoid 44 flight diversions and returns, according to Xinhua. Additionally, Moji Weather introduced a meteorological solution for China’s new power system centered on its ElectroMetis energy SaaS platform. The system combines high-resolution weather data and AI forecasts with satellite, radar, and on-site information to support power generation, grid operations, trading, and maintenance decisions.
Global Weather Modeling and Typhoon Support
Artificial intelligence is extending the range of meteorological services by converting forecasts directly into operational instructions. Envision Group developed a weather foundation model named Yuanjing Tianji, which generates global forecasts up to 45 days ahead at a 5-kilometer resolution with updates every 10 minutes, Xinhua reported. The model ranked first in the WeatherBench 2 evaluation, outperforming comparable models from Google and Microsoft. During the recent typhoon season, the Yuanjing Tianji model provided decision support across the entire storm lifecycle, spanning pre-landfall equipment inspections, resource deployment, turbine shutdown and restart decisions, and post-storm maintenance planning, according to Xinhua’s reporting from the CIFTIS exhibition in Beijing.
