China Wins First Gold in Women’s Modern Pentathlon at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games
China claimed its first gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, winning the modern pentathlon women’s team event in Japan, according to official competition results.
The early victory keeps China on track as it attempts to maintain its decades-long dominance at the continental multisport event. According to reporting by China Daily, the delegation entered the 20th Asian Games with 815 athletes competing across 38 sports.
Broad Delegation and Historic Dominance in Nagoya
The 20th Asian Games officially opened on Saturday at the newly renovated Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Aichi prefecture, Japan. According to China Daily, this marks the third time Japan has hosted the Games, following Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994. Across the 16-day schedule running through Oct 4, 2026, athletes will compete for 469 gold medals across 43 sports at 54 venues.
China’s massive delegation includes competitors in 369 events, featuring a mix of Olympic champions, established stars, and younger competitors. World champion in women’s boxing Wu Yu and men’s basketball team captain Hu Mingxuan served as the delegation’s flag bearers during the opening ceremony.
According to historical records cited by China Daily, China has topped both the gold medal and overall medal standings at every Asian Games since the 1982 New Delhi edition. That unbroken streak reached 11 consecutive editions at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.
Opening Weekend Competition and Team Campaigns
Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani spoke at the opening ceremony about the unifying power of sport during times of international division. Competition across triathlon, road cycling, and wushu also produced early medal battles on Sunday.
China has a strong history of fast starts at the event. According to China Daily, the nation has won the first gold medal of the Asian Games eight times since first participating in 1974, including the first gold at each of the past six editions.
Team sports are also underway in Aichi-Nagoya. China’s women’s basketball team opened its campaign on Saturday, defeating Thailand 111-46. Head coach Gong Luming noted that the squad arrived in Japan following a quarterfinal appearance at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, an experience that strengthened team unity.
