China’s average annual salary is projected to reach approximately 120,698 yuan (roughly $16,600 USD) in 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MHRSS). This figure translates to an average monthly income of 10,060 yuan ($1,385 USD).

While this represents a comparable income level to some European Union member states and exceeds that of many Asian countries, the national average masks significant regional and sectoral disparities. The eastern region of China currently demonstrates the highest annual salary and growth rate, averaging 124,019 yuan.

The projected salary landscape for 2025 reflects a moderate decrease from the 5% salary increase observed in 2024, with an overall expected increase rate of 4.3%. This slowdown is attributed to both economic instability and cost control measures being implemented by organizations across the country, according to a WTW Salary Budget Planning Report survey. Approximately 40.5% of companies surveyed cited anticipated economic slowdowns as a key factor influencing their salary increase budgets, while 36.3% pointed to cost management challenges.

Industry-specific trends further illustrate this nuanced picture. The automotive sector, undergoing a transition from combustion engines to smart vehicles, is experiencing a moderated salary increase rate of 3.2% – a slight drop from 3.5% in 2024. This is due, in part, to the phasing out of traditional roles and restructuring within the industry. While investment is increasing in areas like electric vehicle technology, battery development, and automotive software, companies are exercising caution regarding workforce expansion due to market saturation.

Conversely, the biopharmaceutical and life sciences sector remains relatively robust, with a projected salary increase of 5% in 2025, down slightly from 5.4% in 2024. Strong government support for biologics, gene and cell therapies, and other innovative areas is contributing to sustained salary growth within this industry.

The minimum wage in China also varies considerably by region, ranging from 1,690 to 2,690 yuan per month (approximately $235 to $375 USD) in 2025. Local authorities are responsible for setting these rates, taking into account factors such as economic growth, average wages, living standards, unemployment rates, food prices, and real estate costs. These rates are legally required to be reviewed at least every two years.

The average monthly salary in China is also estimated to be approximately ¥10,417 in 2025, although wage increases are described as slow. Salaries are heavily influenced by location, industry, and professional experience, with major cities like Beijing and Shanghai generally offering higher compensation packages than smaller provinces.

The evolving salary landscape in China is attracting skilled labor from abroad, with cities like Beijing and Shanghai proving particularly popular destinations for migrant workers. Despite a perceived slowdown in overall economic growth, experts anticipate continued increases in worker remuneration in the coming years.
