A newly completed expressway in Xinjiang, China, featuring the world’s longest tunnel, has considerably reduced travel time between Urumqi and Korla, transforming a once arduous journey.
Transforming a Mountain Passage
A previously difficult mountain journey that took several hours – reportedly up to seven - has been reduced to approximately 20 minutes thanks to the opening of a new expressway tunnel, according to reports from China’s state media on December 29, 2023. The tunnel is a key component of the G0711 Urumqi-Yuli expressway, which became fully operational on Friday, December 29, 2023, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
Song Hailiang, chairman of China Communications Construction Company, stated that the project has established new global benchmarks in expressway construction. He specifically highlighted that the tunnel is “the longest expressway tunnel in the world and has the deepest vertical shaft for a highway tunnel,” as quoted in official media reports.
Strategic Transportation Artery
The G0711 Urumqi-Yuli expressway is designed to serve as a vital transportation link connecting city clusters in northern and southern xinjiang. The Tianshan mountain range, stretching approximately 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) across central Xinjiang, historically separated Urumqi, the provincial capital, from Korla, the largest city in the south. This geographical barrier presented meaningful logistical challenges.
With the expressway now open, the travel time between Urumqi and Korla has been slashed from around seven hours to approximately three hours, significantly boosting connectivity and facilitating economic activity in the region. This reduction in travel time is expected to have a significant impact on trade, tourism, and overall development in Xinjiang.
Project Details and Investment
The 324.7-kilometer (201.7-mile) expressway was constructed over a five-year period, requiring a total investment of 46.7 billion yuan (roughly $6.63 billion USD as of December 29, 2023). China daily reports that the project involved overcoming significant engineering hurdles, especially in the construction of the record-breaking tunnel.
Xinjiang’s Infrastructure Development
This expressway is part of a broader effort by the Chinese government to improve infrastructure in Xinjiang, a strategically critically important region bordering several Central Asian countries. Increased investment in transportation networks aims to facilitate economic integration, promote regional development, and strengthen connectivity with neighboring nations. The region is a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative, and improved infrastructure is crucial for realizing its goals.
