China’s excavator exports jumped 31.8 percent year-on-year in the first eight months of the year, exceeding domestic sales growth and totaling 96,938 units, according to data from the China Construction Machinery Association (CCMA) cited by CCTV News. The surge highlights a broader shift in heavy machinery manufacturing, where overseas shipments outpaced domestic sales of 94,619 units over the same period.
Export Performance Outpaces Domestic Sales
Total excavator sales reached 191,557 units in the first eight months of 2026, marking a 24.2 percent increase compared to the previous year, CCMA reported. Exports accounted for 96,938 of those units, growing at 31.8 percent year-on-year, while domestic sales reached 94,619 units, up 17.4 percent.
In yuan-denominated terms, customs data cited by CCMA showed that export value for August reached 41.21 billion yuan, or approximately $6.14 billion, representing a 12.5 percent increase from a year earlier. Between January and August, the aggregate export value reached 321.575 billion yuan, marking a 16.1 percent rise compared to the same period last year.
Global Demand and Regional Infrastructure Projects Drive Growth
The strong overseas performance is driven by a steady recovery in global demand and the industry's competitive strengths, according to Hu Qimu, a professor at the Maritime Silk Road Institute of Huaqiao University. Hu stated that strong mining activity, continued urbanization, and infrastructure investment across Asia, Africa, and Latin America have sustained high demand for medium- and large-sized excavators. Meanwhile, distributors in European and US markets are undergoing an inventory restocking cycle, and the construction of artificial intelligence data centers has boosted demand for small-sized construction equipment.
Major Chinese heavy equipment manufacturers reported significant international project deployments and single-order records. XCMG announced on July 27 that it shipped nearly 300 crawler cranes in a single batch to Southeast Asia for infrastructure projects, setting a regional record. Zoomlion stated on June 9 that dozens of ZT125G mining dump trucks were fully assembled and shipped to an open-pit gold mine in northern Peru for overburden stripping and ore transport.
Customized Manufacturing for European and US Markets
Chinese manufacturers have also experienced strong reception for customized products tailored to regional environmental regulations. Sany reported that sales revenue for mini excavator products in European and US markets rose more than 50 percent year-on-year from January to August, with shipments originating from its Kunshan Lighthouse Factory.
According to Li Xiaobo, Vice Dean of the Electrification R&D Institute at SANY Heavy Industry’s Heavy Machinery Division, a newly designed electric wheeled excavator built to match European endurance standards and green mandates has achieved exceptional results. Equipped with a standard 400-kWh battery pack, the model operates for 10 to 12 hours on a single charge with zero emissions and low noise, according to Li. Sany’s production line processes every mini excavator through 94 production steps and performance testing at a pace of one unit every 12 minutes.
