China’s top automakers are showcasing their latest models and technologies from intelligent driving to ultrafast charging in Beijing as they compete with global rivals in overseas markets.

At the Auto China 2026 exhibition in Beijing, Chinese EV maker XPeng presented its latest GX model, a six-seater SUV with a third row of seats that can lie completely flat. During a presentation attended by large crowds, XPeng Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng highlighted an advanced driver assistance feature designed to enhance safety during highway travel.

When you’re driving on the highway, you fall asleep, or if you feel unwell and can no longer control the vehicle, the system can detect the situation, pull over automatically and alert emergency services.

He added that many people who have tried the system describe it as amazing. The feature represents part of XPeng’s broader push into intelligent driving technologies aimed at reducing accidents caused by driver fatigue or sudden medical issues.

Chinese EV maker BYD showcased its new generation of the “blade” EV battery at the auto show, which was first unveiled the previous month. The battery supports near-full charging in just nine minutes under normal conditions. BYD also demonstrated the battery’s performance in extreme cold, successfully charging it at temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius in a sub-zero temperature chamber at its booth.

The Beijing Auto Show 2026 opened to media on Friday, April 24, and runs until May 3. More than 1,450 vehicles are on display, including 181 global debuts. Official data confirms that a total of 1,451 vehicles will be exhibited at this year’s event.

Analysts note that the biennial auto show in Beijing is setting the global pace for cutting-edge technologies in electric vehicles and batteries, reflecting how China’s automotive industry is shifting from follower to innovation leader in the global competition. The event underscores the deep integration of electrification and intelligent driving systems as key differentiators for Chinese automakers in overseas markets.
