China’s Young Guns Blaze a Trail: U23 Men’s Baseball Team Secures Spot in Bronze Medal Tournament
Making History: Chinese Team Advances to U23 Men’s Baseball World Cup Bronze Medal Tournament
Beijing, September 14 – The Chinese team has made history by advancing to the U23 Men’s Baseball World Cup Bronze Medal Tournament, held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. According to the Chinese Baseball Association, the team defeated Nicaragua 4:0 in the super round, securing a place in the semi-finals.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Chinese team, as it is their first time participating in this event and entering the top six in other age group competitions of the same level. The team’s record of top four has set a new benchmark for Chinese baseball.
The competition features a 7-game system, with 12 participating teams divided into two groups for a round-robin group match. The top three teams in each group advance to the super round, where opponents in the same group do not play against each other, and their results are carried forward to the group stage. The top two teams advance to the gold medal match, while the third and fourth teams advance to the bronze medal match.
Despite entering the Super Round with a record of 0 wins and 2 losses, the Chinese team persevered and secured crucial victories. In their match against Venezuela, the team established a 6:2 lead in the top half of the seventh inning and resisted the counterattack, winning 6:5 against a team ranked 19 places higher in the world.
Against Nicaragua, the only undefeated team in the group stage, the Chinese team took a 2:0 lead in the first inning. In the sixth inning, Wu Qirui hit a triple to left field, scoring another point for the team. Zhu Xudong’s precise bunt helped Wu Qirui run back to home base, giving the Chinese team a 4:0 lead that they maintained until the end.
Starting pitcher Zhao Wei pitched a complete game and shut out the opponent, marking the first time the Chinese team shut out an opponent in this tournament.
With this victory, China and Nicaragua both have 2 wins and 3 losses in the Super Round, with China ranking third based on the win-loss record. The two teams will meet again in the bronze medal match. Puerto Rico, with 5 wins and 0 losses in the group stage, will compete with Japan, which has 4 wins and 1 loss, for the gold medal.
Due to the impact of Typhoon Bebejia, the gold medal and bronze medal matches will be held simultaneously at 9 a.m. on the 15th.
