Chinese Airlines Dominate Europe Routes as European Carriers Retreat
Chinese Airlines Soar as European Rivals Struggle in Transatlantic Skies
Chinese airlines are rapidly expanding their presence in the European market, capitalizing on airspace closures and a weakened European aviation sector.
While European carriers grapple with the fallout of the pandemic and the ongoing closure of Russian airspace, Chinese airlines are filling the void, offering an increasing number of flights and routes to European destinations.
This surge in Chinese air traffic has led to a dramatic shift in market share. According to aviation analyst Piotr Grobelny, Chinese airlines now control 77% of the traffic between China and Europe, a significant jump from the pre-pandemic figure of 50%. In some countries, like Italy and the UK,Chinese carriers dominate the market, holding 100% and 95% market share respectively.
This dominance is partly attributed to the closure of Russian airspace, which has forced European airlines to take longer, more expensive routes to Asia. Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA),has criticized the airspace closure, calling it “a political decision” that unfairly disadvantages European airlines.
“The closure of Russian airspace has nothing to do with safety, nor with security,” Walsh stated. ”European airlines are the victims of politics.”
While European carriers have largely remained silent on the issue, some industry experts believe they are facing an uphill battle. Andrew Charlton, managing director of the Aviation Advocacy consultancy, suggests that lobbying for reciprocal airspace closures is unlikely to be successful.
“They could try to lobby for competitors to have to honor the airspace closure too,but that is never really going to fly,” Charlton said.
The rise of Chinese airlines in the European market raises questions about the future of transatlantic air travel. As chinese carriers continue to expand their operations, they are poised to become major players in the global aviation landscape.

Chinese Airlines Ascendant: An Expert Weighs In on Transatlantic Shifts
NewsDirect3.com: Teh European aviation sector is facing unprecedented challenges, with Chinese airlines seizing the chance in a rapidly changing landscape. To understand the implications of this shift, NewsDirect3.com spoke with aviation analyst Piotr Grobelny.
NewsDirect3.com: Mr. Grobelny,Chinese airlines have significantly increased their presence in the European market. What factors are driving this expansion?
Piotr Grobelny: The closure of Russian airspace has undeniably played a major role. It has forced European airlines to take longer, more expensive routes to asia, giving Chinese carriers a competitive edge. they can operate more direct routes, leading to lower costs and shorter travel times.
NewsDirect3.com: We’ve seen reports that Chinese airlines now control a commanding 77% of the traffic between China and Europe. Were these gains predictable?
Piotr Grobelny: The situation was ripe for disruption. The pandemic already weakened European carriers, and the airspace closure amplified those vulnerabilities. Chinese airlines, with their government backing and efficient operations, were well-positioned to capitalize on the instability.
NewsDirect3.com: Some industry experts argue that European airlines are facing an uphill battle in regaining market share. Do you agree?
Piotr Grobelny: It’s definitely a tough situation. Lobbying for reciprocal airspace closures seems unlikely to succeed, and simply competing on price may not be sustainable for European carriers in the long run. They need to find innovative solutions and differentiate themselves to appeal to passengers.
NewsDirect3.com: What does this surge in Chinese dominance mean for the future of transatlantic air travel?
Piotr Grobelny: It signals a major shift in the global aviation landscape.Chinese airlines are emerging as dominant players, not just in Asia but perhaps worldwide. European airlines need to adapt quickly to remain competitive in this new reality.
