Chinese Duo Dominates: Zhang Shuai and Zheng Qinwen Storm into US Open Women’s Doubles Semi-Finals
Zhang Shuai and Zheng Qinwen Shine at the US Open
Chinese tennis player Zhang Shuai and French player Mladenovic have advanced to the women’s doubles semi-finals at the 2024 US Open, after defeating their opponents 7:6 (2), 6:4 in the quarter-finals.
Zhang Shuai has had a successful run in the US Open doubles, having won the championship in 2021 with Australian player Stosur. This marks her third time advancing to the US Open doubles semi-finals and her sixth time entering the Grand Slam doubles semi-finals. Zhang Shuai and Mladenovic will face Siniakova and Townsend in the semi-finals.
In the women’s singles quarter-finals, Chinese player Zheng Qinwen lost to Belarusian star Sabalenka 1:6, 2:6, missing the opportunity to advance to the semi-finals. Despite this, Zheng Qinwen has shown remarkable progress, having made it to the women’s singles quarterfinals at the US Open last year and the Grand Slam women’s singles final at the Australian Open this year.
Zheng Qinwen’s serve was not in top condition during the match, with a first serve success rate of only 44%. Sabalenka took advantage of this, securing 8 break points and breaking Zheng Qinwen’s serve 4 times. After the match, Zheng Qinwen reflected on her performance, admitting to feeling tired and regretting not seizing key opportunities. “Next time, I will be more relaxed and try to play more rounds,” she said, expressing her determination to move forward.
With the four Grand Slam tournaments for the season complete, Zheng Qinwen will continue to compete in the WTA tour, striving to qualify for the WTA year-end finals.
