Chinese Fighters Target SDF Jets – Radar Lock-On, Japan Says
China’s Military Locks Radar on Japanese Aircraft, Escalating Regional Tensions
A concerning incident unfolded over international waters southeast of Okinawa Prefecture on Saturday, December 6, 2025, as Chinese military fighter jets locked their fire-control radar on japanese air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) aircraft. This aggressive maneuver, confirmed by Japan’s Defense Ministry, marks a significant escalation in the already strained relationship between the two nations.
The incident involved J-15 fighter jets operating from the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier.According to the Defense Ministry’s statement released Sunday, the chinese aircraft “intermittently directed their radar” at Japanese F-15 fighters that had been scrambled in response to a potential airspace incursion. Radar locking is a preparatory step before firing missiles, and is considered a antagonistic act.
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi described the radar lock as a “dangerous act exceeding the scope necessary for safe aircraft operations.” He further stated during a press conference that the incident was “deeply regrettable” and that Japan had formally protested to China, demanding measures to prevent a recurrence.
While details surrounding the initial potential airspace intrusion remain limited, the radar lock itself represents a substantial risk of miscalculation and escalation. Experts in military aviation note that such actions can be interpreted as a deliberate show of force and a challenge to Japan’s regional security posture. The incident underscores the growing frequency of close encounters between chinese and Japanese military aircraft, especially in the airspace surrounding the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, a group of uninhabited islands claimed by both countries.
This latest confrontation occurs against a backdrop of increasing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific region. The incident is likely to further complicate diplomatic efforts and coudl prompt Japan to bolster its defense capabilities and strengthen its security alliance with the United States.
