Investigators stated that the two had been in a relationship, and the killing occurred during an argument when the victim threatened to report their affair to the university. Police transferred Zheng to the prosecution on charges of murder, mutilating, abandoning and concealing a corpse, and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means, according to The Korea Herald.
Investigation Details and Concealment Efforts
Following the alleged killing, Zheng reportedly mutilated the victim’s body and abandoned the remains in multiple locations, including Gyeongju and Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul. Authorities stated that the search for unrecovered remains would continue. Investigators found that Zheng attempted to obstruct the police probe by filing a false missing-person report. Officials also stated that he disguised himself as a woman, traveled to Dongdaegu Station, and turned off the victim’s phone to conceal her movements. A polygraph test administered during the investigation indicated no deception regarding his stated motive, according to police statements reported by The Korea Herald. Furthermore, Zheng underwent an assessment using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), scoring below the threshold of 25 out of 40 commonly used in South Korea to classify someone as a psychopath.

The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency publicly disclosed Zheng’s name, age, and mug shots on its website on Aug. 26, 2025, following a review committee meeting that determined the crime was particularly brutal and caused grave harm. As the case moves to prosecution, officials announced plans to investigate separate allegations that Zheng threatened other female students, telling them they needed to remain in his good graces to graduate.
