A Chinese coast guard vessel sustained “substantial damage” after colliding with a Chinese navy warship during a confrontation with teh Philippine coast guard in the South China Sea, officials have saeid. the incident, which occurred on Monday, is the latest in a series of escalating encounters between China and the philippines in the disputed waterway.
Details of the Confrontation
According to Commodore Jay tarriella, a spokesperson for the Philippine coast guard, the Chinese Coast Guard vessel CCG 3104 was pursuing the Philippine vessel BRP Suluan “at high speed” when it executed a risky manoeuvre. This manoeuvre resulted in a collision with a People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA) warship.
“This resulted in substantial damage to the CCG vessel’s forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy,” Tarriella stated.
Prior to the collision, the BRP Suluan was targeted with a water cannon by the Chinese coast guard, but successfully evaded the blast.Tarriella noted that crew members were visible in the front section of the Chinese vessel just before the impact, raising concerns about potential injuries.
“We’re not sure whether they were able to rescue those personnel who were in front prior to the collision. But we are hoping that these personnel are in good condition,” he said, adding that the Philippine ship offered assistance, which was not accepted by the Chinese crew.
China’s Response
gan Yu, a Chinese coast guard spokesperson, acknowledged a confrontation took place but did not mention the collision. He stated that the China Coast Guard “took necessary measures in accordance with the law, including monitoring, pressing from the outside, blocking and controlling the Philippine vessels to drive them away.”
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to confirm or deny the collision when questioned.
Escalating Tensions in the South China sea
Monday’s incident represents a significant escalation in tensions between China and the Philippines. The South China Sea is a vital international trade route, with over 60% of global maritime trade passing through its waters. China claims almost the entirety of the sea, a claim rejected by an international tribunal in 2016, which found it to have no legal basis. The Philippines, along with Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, all have competing claims to parts of the sea.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. affirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining a presence in the area. “Our patrol vessels will continue to be present” to defend Manila’s sovereign rights, he stated at a news conference.
Scarborough Shoal: A Key Flashpoint
The Scarborough Shoal,a triangular chain of reefs and rocks, has been a especially contentious area since China seized control of it from the Philippines in 2012. This latest incident underscores the ongoing disputes and the potential for further escalation in the region. the Philippines views the shoal as within its exclusive economic zone and continues to assert its claims despite China’s presence.
