Chip Off the Old Block: Republicans Set to Reverse Landmark Bill, Harris Fires Back in Heated Election Showdown
US Election 2024: Kamala Harris Criticizes Republican Plan to Reverse Chip Bill
United States Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has criticized Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson for changing his comments about reversing the CHIPS and Science Act, citing unpopularity as the reason.
Johnson initially stated at a campaign event for the New York State House of Representatives that if the Republican Party maintains its advantage in congressional seats, it is expected to reverse the chip bill. However, he later clarified that he had misheard the question, noting that reversing the chip bill was not on the Republican agenda.
Harris responded to Johnson’s comments at a campaign event in Wisconsin, stating that the Republican plan to reverse the chip bill reflects Donald Trump’s intention to implement the conservative policy plan “Plan 2025” if he returns to the White House.
Harris emphasized that her policy will continue to invest in American manufacturing, which she believes is crucial for the United States to defeat China in competition in the 21st century.
She also pointed out that Johnson’s clarification of his comments was due to the unpopularity of his initial statement.
Trump has previously criticized Taiwan for taking advantage of the US chip business and offered to impose additional tariffs on imported chips. He has also criticized the chip bill passed by both parties in Congress in 2022, stating that it lends billions of dollars to rich companies to set up chip businesses in the United States without getting investment from good companies.
