Chipotle’s experiment with an AI-powered recruiter, affectionately named “Ava Cado,” has yielded extraordinary results in streamlining its hiring process and attracting more applicants. However, the technology hasn’t yet translated into a boost in customer traffic, as the fast-casual giant recently reported a decline in sales for the second consecutive quarter.
Ava Cado: A Game Changer for Chipotle’s Recruitment
Last fall, Chipotle announced its strategic adoption of an AI tool, Ava Cado, designed to accelerate its hiring pipeline. According to Ilene Eskenazi, Chipotle’s Chief Human Resources Officer, the initiative has been a resounding success in terms of applicant engagement and completion rates.
Boosting Application Completion and Candidate Preparedness
Eskenazi shared with CNBC that as implementing Ava Cado, the company has witnessed a “dramatic” increase in the number of applications received. The AI tool has been instrumental in achieving an 85% application completion rate, a figure significantly higher then the industry average. Ava Cado assists candidates by helping them fill in necessary fields, thereby reducing the time and effort required to submit an application.
“We’ve seen an 85% application completion rate, which is much higher than average,” Eskenazi stated. “The tool helps candidates fill in fields, which cuts down the time it takes to complete.”
Beyond just completion rates, Ava Cado is also enhancing the quality of candidates entering the hiring process. Eskenazi noted that applicants are now arriving at interviews much better prepared, having gained a clearer understanding of the job requirements through their interaction with the AI.
“They’re much more informed about what the job really is,and so then we know that the applicants are that much more interested in the job by the time they’re meeting a hiring manager in person,” Eskenazi explained. “I personally have been pleasantly surprised by how much candidates have enjoyed interacting with Ava.”
The AI’s ability to provide a more informed and engaging initial experience has led to a reduction in the time it takes to onboard new employees. what once took five days now takes a more efficient three and a half days, indicating a critically important improvement in operational efficiency for chipotle’s HR department.
The Sales Conundrum: AI’s Impact on Customer Traffic
Despite the clear advantages Ava Cado has brought to Chipotle’s recruitment efforts, the technology has not yet influenced the company’s sales figures. Last week, Chipotle reported that customer traffic had declined for the second quarter in a row, a trend that highlights a disconnect between internal operational improvements and external market performance.
This situation raises questions about the broader impact of AI in the service industry, particularly when it comes to customer-facing aspects of the business. while Ava Cado is proving effective in attracting and preparing potential employees, its influence on customer behavior and sales remains to be seen.**
