At the New York City premiere of his new film, “Materialists,” Chris Evans offered a glimpse into his relationship with his wife, Alba Baptista, recounting the story of his marriage proposal. The actor revealed to the Knot that he learned Portuguese to pop the question.
Evans, discussing the lead-up to the proposal, said, “Maybe I shouldn’t even be saying this… I proposed to my wife — she’s Portuguese — so I learned how to say, ‘Will you marry me?’ in Portuguese. I had practiced all week.”
However, all that practice nearly spoiled the surprise. Evans explained that he rehearsed the phrase so often he almost blurted it out accidentally. “I had practiced it so much that while I’d be making breakfast, you almost just start saying it out loud and you’re like ‘Oh god! That’s not just a song that’s stuck in my head. It’s going to let the cat out of the bag!’” he said.
Despite his nerves, Evans successfully proposed. He admitted, “I got really nervous when it came time to do it and I actually think I screwed it up. But I still know it!”
The couple, who prefer to keep their relationship private, were first linked in November 2022. Evans later shared moments with Baptista on social media, including a Valentine’s day tribute.
Chris Evans and Alba Baptista reportedly married in a private Cape Cod ceremony in September 2023. Evans confirmed the marriage at New York Comic Con in October 2023, sharing that they had two wedding ceremonies, one in the United States and one in Portugal.
