Chris McCausland to Highlight Disability Discrimination in Christmas Message
Comedian chris McCausland, fresh off his Strictly Come Dancing victory, will deliver Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message this year. McCausland, the first blind person to win Strictly, will use the platform to address disability discrimination and advocate for equality.
The alternative Christmas message, an annual tradition since 1993, provides a contrasting perspective to the monarch’s address.McCausland’s speech is expected to emphasize the resilience and determination of disabled individuals.
McCausland plans to open his message with a metaphor comparing his love for all types of mince pies to the concept of equality. He intends to highlight the importance of valuing everyone, regardless of their differences.
A key focus of McCausland’s message will be a call for increased funding for the goverment’s Access to Work scheme. This program supports individuals with disabilities or health conditions in returning to employment but currently faces critically important backlogs.
Government statistics indicate a disparity in employment rates, with 53% of disabled people employed in the second quarter of 2024, compared to 81.6% of non-disabled people.
“Is that discrimination? Well, I would argue it is, so let’s try and fix it, eh? I think the government can commit to something better than what they already do,” McCausland said, referring to the employment statistics.
McCausland, a regular on “Have I Got News for You,” acknowledged his position as a representative for marginalized groups following his Strictly win.
“And also being a comedian, I am – whether I like it or not – representative of another group of people, people who are blind, people with a disability and people who are underrepresented,” McCausland said.
Previous speakers for Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message include Stephen Fry, Edward Snowden, John Bercow, and Danny Dyer.
