The future of veteran NBA point guard Chris Paul remains uncertain as the February 5 trade deadline approaches. Currently with the Los Angeles Clippers, Paul has been sidelined since early December after the team sent him home due to underwhelming performance and leadership concerns.
Despite being effectively removed from the Clippers’ rotation, Paul, who signed a one-year, $3.63 million contract with the team last offseason, continues to train as if preparing to play. However, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, “there has been no substantial movement toward finding him a new home” before Thursday’s deadline.
Ex-Thunder star Chris Paul finds career in limbo as deadline approaches
The Clippers are reportedly willing to facilitate a trade that would send Paul to a team where he has a legitimate chance to compete for an NBA championship, recognizing his status as an all-time great and his long-standing relationship with the organization. However, the trade market for the 40-year-old guard has largely dried up.
Contending teams appear hesitant to give up valuable assets for a player averaging just 2.9 points and 3.3 assists across 16 games this season, especially as Paul has indicated this is likely to be his final year in the league. The most probable outcome, at this point, is that Paul will remain with the Clippers past the deadline and then negotiate a buyout agreement, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.
While acquiring Paul via trade may not appeal to many teams, signing him on the open market for a minimal cost could be an attractive option for teams seeking experienced backcourt depth. There’s even speculation that the Oklahoma City Thunder could emerge as a potential suitor, given their recent injury issues and limited ball-handling options behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Regardless of how his situation resolves, many believe Chris Paul deserves a fitting conclusion to his storied NBA career. Whether through a trade or a buyout, the hope is that “the Point God” will have the opportunity to continue playing in his 21st season, rather than being forced into retirement.
