Porto Squad Fit and Contract Terms
Smalling has agreed to a one-year contract that includes an option for an additional season. Porto brought in the veteran defender as defensive cover and to compete directly with existing center-backs Jakub Kiwior, formerly of Arsenal, and Jan Bednarek, formerly of Southampton. The move places Smalling back into Europe’s elite club competition as Porto currently leads the Primeira League table with seven wins from seven matches.
Speaking to talkSPORT Breakfast in August regarding his search for a new club, Smalling outlined his deliberate approach to evaluating offers. At the minute, there’s conversations ongoing. I’ve had some offers, so I feel like I’m in a good position,
Smalling said during the broadcast. But at my stage in my career, it’s now about being patient, making sure it’s the right kind of project that fits everything in terms of my role in the team and what I can bring on and off the pitch.
Career Trajectory and Major Honors
Smalling began his professional career with Millwall before playing non-league football for Maidstone United, eventually earning an academy move to Fulham where he made 13 Premier League appearances. That progression prompted Manchester United to agree to a pre-contract transfer in 2010. During his nine-year tenure at Old Trafford under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Smalling won two Premier League titles alongside the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League, collecting nine major trophies across his career.
Following his departure from Manchester United, Smalling established himself abroad with Italian club Roma under manager José Mourinho. He played ten matches and scored a goal during the Conference League campaign to help Roma capture their first European title, marking the club’s first-ever European trophy. Internationally, Smalling earned 31 caps for the England national team, playing every minute of their campaign at UEFA Euro 2016.
