Mexico City – A significant development has unfolded in the ongoing legal dispute between regional Mexican superstar Christian Nodal and Universal Music. Sources confirmed today, , that the legal team representing Nodal directly in the criminal investigation before the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) has formally resigned.
The resignation impacts only the portion of the case where Nodal is being investigated for alleged falsification and use of false documents related to the dispute over the copyrights of his musical works and the claim of ownership over several of his songs. The overall legal process remains active.
The attorneys who have stepped down – identified as Rodrigo Flores Calderón, Pablo Flores Calderón, Daniel Hernández Silva, and Edgar Fernando Torres Ibarra – notified the FGR of their withdrawal from Nodal’s defense. However, they will continue to represent Nodal’s parents, Silvia Cristina Nodal Jiménez and Jesús Jaime González Terrazas, who are also implicated in the case.
According to the resignation document, the attorneys are revoking their mandate to continue defending the singer, while maintaining their role as legal representatives for the other individuals under investigation. This separation does not signify a closure of the case, but it does raise questions about who will assume responsibility for Nodal’s defense in this phase of the proceedings.
As of today, there has been no public confirmation regarding the new legal team that will take over Nodal’s defense, nor has a reason been given for the change. The move could be a strategic maneuver to separate legal files, restructure the defense strategy, or buy time within the ongoing criminal investigation.
The conflict between Nodal and Universal Music originated when the singer initiated a civil lawsuit against the record label in an attempt to regain the copyrights to songs recorded during his contract with the company. This led to a counter-claim by Universal Music to the fiscalía alleging the falsification of documents related to those contracts.
The resignation of his legal counsel marks a new chapter in this protracted legal battle, the outcome of which remains uncertain. Nodal now faces the task of appointing a new legal team to continue defending his case in both the criminal and civil proceedings.
Currently, while a new representation is being determined, the singer remains without direct legal defense in the open case file before federal authorities.
The initial stages of the legal conflict saw Nodal attempt to halt the effects of the lawsuit with an injunction filed on August 28, 2025. However, that request was denied by judicial authorities, as the petition, according to file 729/2025, did not clearly specify what was being challenged. A key hearing was scheduled for September 10, 2025, to determine whether the injunction would be granted definitively or rejected.
Further complicating matters, in November 2025, a federal judge declined to link Nodal and his parents to the alleged crime, citing the existence of a parallel civil case. The judge determined that the outcome of the civil proceedings needed to be known before deciding whether to pursue criminal action. However, the FGR affirmed that the criminal case remained open and that it could continue to gather evidence.
Universal Music’s accusations against Nodal stem from claims that the singer and his parents falsified signatures and documents, specifically alleging the submission of 32 false contracts to support their claims regarding the ownership of his songs. This occurred after Nodal began a new professional relationship with Sony Music.
The situation remains fluid, with the possibility of a settlement between Nodal and Universal Music still on the table, according to sources close to the case. Such an agreement could potentially resolve both the civil and criminal conflicts without the need for a trial. However, with his legal team now altered, the path forward for Christian Nodal remains uncertain.
