Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ Line: How It Happened
Christina Aguilera Reveals How Linda Perry Kept “Stunning’s” Raw Opening Whisper
Christina Aguilera is opening up about teh making of her iconic 2002 ballad, “Beautiful,” and how producer Linda Perry’s decision to keep a candid, whispered moment at the song’s beginning perfectly captured its vulnerable essence. The pop superstar shared the anecdote, revealing that the raw, unscripted opening was a result of her feeling insecure while in the recording booth.
The “Beautiful” Beginning: A Moment of Vulnerability
The conversation arose when host Dev Griffin asked Aguilera if it was true that she recorded the hit song – wich soared to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2003 – while lying down.”Lying down? I don’t know if I was coming up or down or whatever,” Aguilera replied with a laugh. “But it was a special moment, because I had somebody else in the booth with me and I was feeling a little bit insecure, which taps into the song and the vulnerability of the moment. And that is where the beginning goes, ‘Don’t look at me.'”
Aguilera elaborated on the significance of that unpolished moment, explaining, “It was real, and it was raw and authentic in the moment, and Linda kept it in the song. Which actually embodies it perfectly, because it’s just introducing, like, ‘I’m insecure but trying to look at the positive and optimism of I’m beautiful no matter what.'”
This intimate whisper, barely audible at the start of “beautiful,” is a testament to Perry’s keen ear and understanding of Aguilera’s artistic vision. The track is featured on Aguilera’s critically acclaimed album Stripped, an LP that delivered many of her most memorable moments.
“stripped”: An Album of Iconic Moments
Stripped, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, is celebrated for its bold artistic direction and personal themes. From the profound vulnerability showcased in “Beautiful” to the groundbreaking and provocative music video for “Dirrty,” the album solidified Aguilera’s evolution as an artist.
Reflecting on the “Dirrty” music video during the podcast, Aguilera expressed her fondness for the experience. “It was just outrageous and fun, but it was one of the best times I’ve ever had on a music video,” she shared. “It was just honestly so fun and such a great memory. I’d do it all over again and I’m glad I had the balls to do it and wear the f-king chaps.”
Aguilera also spoke about the enduring legacy of her “Dirrty” era, noting her delight in seeing fans embrace and reinterpret her creative choices. “I love seeing it, and I love seeing people dress as the ‘Dirrty’ outfits with the chaps [on halloween] and all of it, the black and blonde hair,” she said. “I love seeing people reinvent and have fun with different creative free choices I’ve made. So, it’s a really beautiful thing.”
